I have a friend from the University of Cincinnati who recently journeyed to Tanzania as part of her graduate program in environmental engineering. The engineering portion was the design of a water filtration system that can be made from materials that are easily accessible in Tanzania - PVC buckets and piping, hand-sorted and washed sand, and twine. Granted the water quality is not that which can be found in purified tap water, but it is probably equal to the untreated well water consumed by thousands (maybe millions) of Americans. I feel that this sort of affordable and sustainable practice needs to be taught to the multitudes who do not have access to clean drinking water. It requires very little money, and saves people from avoidable diseases.
